2005

Summary:  In January, Freakwater record the Thinking of You LP and participate in a benefit for Tsunami relief. In March, the Looking for a Thrill DVD is released (Janet and Catherine are interviewed on the disc). In July, Catherine and some old friends put on an art exhibition of their work at the Cinderblock in Louisville. The LP Thinking of You is released on September 13th, and Freakwater undergoes a 35-date American tour to support the work. In December, Janet and Catherine sing backup on Howe Gelb's "Ballad of the Tuscon 2", a disc he produced and sold to benefit two No More Deaths volunteers. Also, Catherine records vocals for the Danish band Homesick Hank on the Paul Oldham-produced LP, Leave it Behind.
2005.09   Freakwater is featured in the Burn to Shine DVD performing their song "Jewel". Burn to Shine is a film series produced by Fugazi's Brendan Canty and directed by film maker Christoph Green. . ..  We travel from town to town and film bands performing in houses that are about to be demolished or burned to the ground. They document the doomed house, the bands, and the demolition, put it together in a 45 minute movie, put it out on DVD and move on to the next town. Each DVD/town has a different curator that is entrenched in the respective music scene and who can pick out what he or she considers their favorite bands. This allows us to put the bands in a geocentric context.  (The DVD) features Wilco, Shellac, Tortoise, Freakwater, Tight Phantoms, Pit er Pat, The Ponys, The Lonesome Organist, and the Red Eyed Legends."  More info here.  Buy the DVD here.

2005.10.18     Freakwater is profiled by the Toronto Sun: I'm not a very fast or prolific writer, obviously," Irwin adds. "I kind of have to have a gun to my head to finish anything. There are always lots of songs that aren't finished, 'cause they don't have to be."
2005.12     Freakwater's Thinking of You earns a 5-star spotlight review from Country Music People.

2005.12.08  Freakwater is profiled by Tuscon Weekly:  "It wasn't any sort of big plan or anything not to make a record," Irwin says, punctuating her comments with the characteristic, deep chuckles that reflect her great onstage humor and the sharp wit in her worldview. "At least twice during that time, we'd actually set up studio time, and then stuff happened, and we couldn't go. I don't think either of us really realized it had been that long."
2005.12.16    Freakwater is profiled by the Memphis Flyer."Being in Freakwater isn't a compulsion,"  Bean says. "It's just something we do. It's utter chaos. People ask what our plan is, and we have to admit that it's totally random."

2005.12.26     Janet and Catherine contribute backup vocals to Howe Gelb's "The Ballad of Tuscon 2" CD single. Gelb recorded and hand made 100 copies, the proceeds of which go toward the legal expenses of two No More Deaths volunteers who were arrested by the US Border Patrol and charged with felony aiding and abetting while giving medical assistance to migrants attempting to cross the desert on their journey from Mexico.
